Like the city of Davis, the campus has a relaxed atmosphere, with abundant open space, trees and lawns. Even as the student population grows, the campus continues to maintain its informal, friendly ambiance. Underlying UC Davis' casual style, however, are a fundamental seriousness and a dedication to academic excellence. Davis students do study hard. But after studying is done they can relax at a movie, public lecture, dance recital or concert. The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, which opened in fall 2002, features top performers from throughout the world. UC Davis welcomes the exchange of opinions and ideas and is committed to advancing the diversity of its students, faculty, staff and administrators. The campus's commitment to a learning environment characterized by mutual respect and understanding is reflected in the UC Davis "Principles of Community."
UC Davis offers hundreds of clubs, sports and cultural activities. The Recreation Center coordinates intercollegiate sports, club sports and intramural programs. The Student Program and Activity Center is a useful resource for available student activities.
